This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students hail from an urban area nestled in the Ohio River Valley. We have a school of around 500, and roughly 90% of our students are classified as "living at or near poverty level" according to Federal guidelines. Our student population is diverse, vibrant, and enthusiastic. The students at our school are curious about the world around them and hungry for ways to explore their world. Many of our students haven't had a chance to experience the outdoors in authentic and meaningful ways that bolster their learning and expose them to the natural wonder and beauty that is all around them.
My Project
This opportunity will allow me to utilize our new Makerspace in order to open our children up to the 21st-century skills needed to succeed in today's technology-laden world. This hands-on, technical training will give me the background knowledge and technical foundation that I need to provide authentic, meaningful content in a way that will be beneficial to all of my students. Computer-aided drafting, 3D printing, and coding are vital areas that this institute addresses. My district has invested in a Makerspace that houses some of these resources. I will be able to utilize these resources efficiently while training other professionals through further development.
