Following In The Footsteps Of History

My students need 25 American History Atlases.

I teach World Geography for sixth and seventh graders and American History for eighth graders. My school is in a lower economic area with most of my students coming from single parent homes. Because I teach three grade levels my budget has to cover materials for three subjects instead of one.

My 8th grade students are very excited about our American History class. Part of our curriculum is to trace their family trees and find out where their families lived at various times in our history. I teach my students how to use RootsWeb and Ancestry to locate relatives. This is a favorite project for students and parents alike. This year I want to add a special feature to their family tree book. I want them to use early American maps and locate the migration paths of settlers. I want them to trace their family's migrations as our nation developed. My problem is I only have one wall map of the United States. Students at the back of my class cannot easily see this map. This map shows only current borders and features. There is no way to show my classes how our nation's borders have changed. I cannot illustrate major migration patterns or roads of the early settlers.

My students need maps they can use at their desks. They need maps that show the development and expansion of our nation. They need maps that show the Native American trails, the Federal Road, the King's Highway and the Fall Line Road. Maps with these roads would give them a visual explanation of the chronological growth of our nation. They could trace their family's migration through time and across a developing nation. I need a class set of American History Atlases. These atlases will give every child in my class a hands-on experience with maps. They will see the changes in our nation's borders and populations.

I have terrific students! Please help me improve their learning environment. This can help make their American History class a favorite part of the day. They will be active learners when they put these American History Atlases to work. They will follow in the footsteps of history and have a greater appreciation of what makes our nation great!
