I teach 5-10 year-old students with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our elementary school's Seperate Setting/Self-Contained classroom. This is our schools first year having this program and we are still in the developing phases. All of my students participate in recess with their peers for socialization as part of their education. We need a more feasible path way for our students in wheel chairs to get to the playground.
My students are looking forward to having a smooth path way to the play ground!
Most students are able to get to the playground in a matter of seconds by going up the stairs, but some of my students are not physically able to go that way and have to take a longer and bumpier route. This route is on the grass where their chairs get stuck in mud puddles or rocks get stuck under their wheels making it challenging for them to get to the playground as quickly as their peers.
My Project
Weather conditions determine if my students will phsycially be able to make it to the playground or if we will have to do indoor recess because of the mud. We are asking for donations for supplies that are made of heavy duty SBR rubber granules, flexible, anti-slip, anti-static, and prevents injuries when you fall down. These slabs have grooved bottom channels so water rolls off the surface. They are long-lasting, durable and are weather/frost resistant materials.
Our walkway to the playground is 160 feet long and each slab is 16 feet long so we will need to order 10 slabs.
