My Homebase is made up of 17 students, but the entire first grade (55 students) mixes with each other during various parts of the day. My students are enthusiastic about learning and love hands-on experiences. Our school is an open-design, Title I school. Students are chosen by way of a lottery drawing from all portions of the city which allows for a mix of socioeconomic levels to be represented.
I believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and accepted in my classroom.
We do community circles and other community building activities to help accomplish this. Students also learn about life skills like caring and honesty and how to put those skills to use.
My Project
Ozobot Bits are mini robots that are user-friendly for young students to learn how to code. Students will use problem solving and critical thinking skills to code the Ozobot Bits. These robots will be used as part of our STEM learning and will also be incorporated in literacy learning.
The skills students will be learning in order to code the Ozobot Bits will likely lend to more opportunities in their technology-filled futures.
One way students may use the Ozobots is to create a story line that the Ozobot will follow as they retell a story they’ve read. Opportunities like these will allow for more creativity and excitement as the students take ownership of their learning.
