Help me give my students a colorful plastic folder that they can proudly take home each week with familiar reading materials inside. They will return it to school each Thursday and then get fun new stories to read!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with elementary age students who are below grade level in reading and writing. I am the coordinator of our school wide Reading Intervention program called RTI (Response to Intervention). Many of the students are second language learners who are very excited about being in school, but need extra support in literacy, especially phonics, writing, and lots of practice in reading. Most just need a good foundation so they can be successful in school.
Our students are learning to read so that later they can read to learn!
It's so fun to see how proud they are about reading! Last year our program helped many eager first grade and second graders show more than year's growth in reading. They were so proud to show their parents how much they have learned by reading to them at home! Taking home books and stories they have read at school is a wonderful way to share English language development in the home. It's such a pleasure to send them off each week with a colorful folder of books they can read successfully at home!
My Project
Each student in our 1st and 2nd grade program will take home a colorful plastic folder with their name on it and it will be filled with stories they have already successfully read in our program. At home they will be so excited to read to an adult or sibling and show how much they have learned!
As Mary Poppins says "Well begun is half done." Which is why early literacy is so important!
Young students who are really excited and eager to read at home show remarkable growth over the school year. This foundation helps them become life long learners. When students return their folders on Thursday, they will be able to take new stories home. Parents sign a weekly sheet in the folder that gives them tips for reading success and helps assure students are reading with/to them at home.
