I am a first grade teacher in a small low income school. I teach all subjects, but this proposal is for science. This coming year our school has a new science curriculum. We are very excited! One way to assess student learning is in a very fun, visual and kinesthetic way. Students will be in charge of creating their own assessment portfolio. These portfolios will be created by the student using a technique called Foldables. These are 3-D, interactive, student-made graphic organizers. As students fold paper, cut tabs, and manipulate what they have made, they are involved in learning. But, to make the portfolios visually stimulating, it is recommended that we use a variety of color paper. This is something our school cannot supply. What I would like to request for my students is a large supply of paper in various bright colors and pastel shades. Even though using Foldables as an assessment tool is recommended for our new science curriculum, I can see many uses throughout our learning environment.
