Help me give my students a tool to help them focus on their work, and limit distractions. My project will provide all 24 of my students with noise canceling headphones. These headphones will limit sounds/distractions while working independently.
The students that I am blessed to teach every day have many diverse challenges in learning in the "regular" classroom. They have difficulty with attending to instruction, completing assignments, and at times communicating with others. They require a lot of attention and refocusing to complete any task they are performing. This year the biggest challenge almost all of them face is the ability to focus long enough to complete what they are working on. The students really need assistance in this area, so they can strive as students.
Focusing for a 6 year old is so challenging, and as a first grade teacher it is my responsibility to provide them with the tools to be successful.
When we ask them to focus, as their teachers we are asking them to ignore all the sounds in the classroom, and distractions in "normal classroom"/school environment. As an adult this is difficult, but for a 6 year old it is almost impossible. Each time a student is distracted from his/her work, (by anything a sound, announcement, friend talking, teacher talking, etc.) they need to remember what they were doing and get back to work. This is so hard for a first grade student.
My Project
Each child in my class, will receive a pair of noise canceling headphones. They will be used during independent work. For example when writing, reading, or working on Math Workbook pages. When they have external distractions, such as noises from a "typical" classroom/school they get distracted and often have a lot of trouble remembering, and refocusing their minds so they can get back to work. These headphones will provide the students with the tool of quiet, so they can remain focused on their work, and be successful while working independently. To ask a 6 year old to focus, is almost unfair. They are young, and have not truly mastered how to do this. These headphones will provide them with a tool that will help them be successful in a task that is so hard for them, simply because it will eliminate the distractions. If they focus on their work, they learn, feel happy, and are successful.
