I have a classroom of 17 students with developmental delays and Autism. Many of the students are developmentally delayed in areas such as life-skills, communication, social skills, cognitive skills, and fine motor skills. These students are three and four year olds, and this is usually their first experience in a school environment.
These students need to be exposed to activities that will help them develop these critical life skills.
One activity they enjoy now is pretend cooking in their kitchen and playing together. I would like to add to this area so that they can extend their development.
This center exposes children to fine motor skills and self-help skills using dress up clothes. Children will gain practice putting on and taking off dress-up clothing. Many of these students have developmental delays that include deficits in fine motor skills, communication, and social skills. In the Housekeeping Center groups of three children will be able to interact with peers which include communicating and socializing with others. Often students with Autism do not interact with others and may be non-verbal, so having materials readily available to encourage imaginary play and interactions with others is priceless.
In conclusion, dress up clothing for the Housekeeping Center will encourage students to communicate with each other, use fine motor skills in buttoning, zipping, and latching, and encourage imaginary play which is a critical developmental skill.
Having dress-up clothes available in the Housekeeping Center will also encourage social and self-help skills which is critical to increasing independence. My students will enjoy exploring the world of imaginative play through the use of new dress up clothing!
