Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to have different learning experiences that they can relate to in their personal lives. I teach at a Title 1 school where close to 95% of all students receive free and reduced lunch. Even though some of our students do not come with much, we provide them with the tools they need to succeed. My 6th grade students are taught in a self-contained classroom. My students work extremely hard every day to overcome the challenges that they face inside and outside the classroom. This has become even more apparent because of the Santa Rosa Tubbs Fire ravaging our community. While our classroom was lucky and none of my students lost their homes, they were all evacuated. We were out of school for several weeks as the fires devastated our town.
My Project
Our school's goal is to turn out students who are 21st Century Learners: students who are prepared to create with technology not just consume others' work. My students are learning to build and maintain digital portfolios to showcase their work. We currently use Chromebooks in the classroom, which are great for many types of digital creation, but are not well suited to photography. As an elementary school, our staff has offered various elective classes for our 4th-6th graders to take that involve real-life learning experiences.
I teach the Photography elective and multiple cameras would allow for increased accessibility in the classroom.
Exposure to different digital cameras will also open up technology opportunities for my students. This would allow for smaller groups using the technology and will give each student more time with hands-on camera experience. Through our 6-week elective program, the goal is to have students with beginning photography experience and a varied portfolio to showcase for it.
