As a dual-language bilingual fourth grade teacher, I have a combined class of Spanish native speakers and English native speakers. My students study reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in both Spanish and English.
My students come to school to receive a high quality education.
However, they face many roadblocks. The majority of my students come from low income households in which they struggle to have their basic needs met on a daily basis. This can cause an immense amount of stress on them, making it hard for them to cope with school situations and being ready to learn. I am hopeful of boosting their ability to overcome these challenges by providing movement activities, community building activities, flexible seating options and by creating a safe environment to learn.
At the beginning of the school year, we started incorporating yoga and mindfulness exercises into our day. The impact in the students' ability to focus has been amazing!
To foster this development, we need more yoga and mindfulness activities and flexible seating options, which this project will help support.
The exercise ball chair and stability discs will help wiggly students to stay focused on learning during independent and instructional times. The yoga and mindfulness activity cards will help students to learn life long strategies to focused, stay healthy and to cope with difficult emotions they may encounter. When students learn these strategies, they are able to more positively interact with their peers. This supports a welcoming and loving classroom environment for all students. In addition to this, they are able to carry these skills with them the rest of their lives.
