This is my 10th year teaching in the Bronx, so I wanted to incorporate something new and fun for all in my classroom! From sitting in many workshops over the summer, I finally decided that having flexible seating could be a wonderful addition to my classroom!
Specifically, bean bags!
I envision having a corner with bean bags and clip boards. Here students will be allowed to partake in the lesson while being comfortable and having sensory stimulation. This can be particularly helpful for students with ADD or ADHD.
My students would absolutely love flexible seating! Our classroom has no windows and my goal is to create a safe comfortable learning space where all of my students will have the opportunity to be their best selfs! I would love to create a “bean bag nook” for them to use while learning. Looking to purchase 3-4 large bean bags!
There are many benefits to flexible seating that include:
choice, community, collaboration, movement, comfort and sensory input!
Thank you so much for your support!
My Project
Having bean bag chairs will give students the opportunity to work from alternative locations in the classroom. This will benefit all students, and will be used for flexible seating opportunities. Having bean bags in the classroom will give the students an opportunity to move and be comfortable while learning. Flexible seating allows for movement, and choice. Opening the classroom environment will encourage greater collaboration, communication and interaction between students and teachers! Lastly, the bean bags will help stimulate some students’ sense of touch. This stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially important for students with ADHD, & ADD.
