Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative thinkers and hard-working learners. They are funny, kind, and thoughtful, and they care about each other and about our classroom community. My students come to school each day excited to learn, and their passion for learning inspires me to teach each day.
As an early-career teacher in a high-needs, urban public school, I am constantly working to provide my students with the tools they need to be successful at school.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and their families routinely make sacrifices to ensure that they have the materials they need to be successful at school. I feel honored to be able to partner with these families as we all work toward children's success.
My Project
When 26 excited second graders are all learning at the same time, sometimes they can become distracted. With the right tools, students can support themselves to do high-quality work and engage deeply with learning tasks, even in classrooms that are busy with lots of students working together.
Learning tools like weighted lap pads and noise-blocking headphones help students to tune out distractions and really focus on their work.
I have seen these tools in action, and have witnessed otherwise easily distracted students become the hardworking, focused scholars they are capable of being. Our classroom has two sets of noise canceling headphones, but expanding our library of learning tools will really make a difference for my students.
