I work in a very active fifth grade classroom. I work hard to ensure that all my students develop and help to foster their growth. They all require differentiated instruction tailored to their own distinctive learning abilities. Research has shown that physical activity is correlated with higher academic performance and improved behavior, I would love to give all my wonderful children the opportunity to thrive. As it is now, my students have no where but the hard floor or school supplied rigid, uncomfortable desk chairs to sit in.
I want to foster a learning environment that is welcoming, comfortable, and make students feel as if they are at home.
Each year I welcome the relationships we create in our room that last well beyond the year they are with me. They make me a better teacher with their questions, interest, and passion.
Offering changes in positions and movement opportunities throughout the day provides the children with much needed bursts of activity. A multi-sensory approach to learning contributes to better learning outcomes, attention, focus, less restlessness, and improves participation and behavior. By encouraging my students to wiggle, bounce or wobble; I will be providing them with tools to help them succeed. Frequent postural adjustments strength the core abdominal and truck musculature thus, promoting motor control to utilize a pencil, crayons and other classroom tools. Supplying students with a variety of lap desk options will allow them to find a comfortable spot and still be able to meet their learning targets, specifically using technology tools such as laptops. Also giving them access to stability balls will increase blood flow but still provide a stable, alternative place to sit.
Dynamic seating allows you to move and adjust yourself in a non disruptive way, burning off excessive energy and and providing muscles the stimuli they desire.
As with any activity, movement increases blood flow to the brain, resulting in increased brain function; allowing improved focus and better knowledge retention.
