My Students

I work in a public elementary school in Wesley Chapel, Florida. I have the privilege of teaching 39 smart, curious, and creative first graders. This year, I have students with a variety of learning needs. I have a wide range of abilities within my two classes, included ESOL, gifted and ESE students. These very eager learners thrive on engaging stories and projects. They are excited to read both fiction and non-fiction text in a variety of formats. They look forward to opportunities to use technology whenever possible.

My Project

The expectations for first graders are more challenging than ever before. Not only are the standards more rigorous, but so too are the expectations for staying focused in the classroom. Finding ways to keep active learners engaged is essential. My students need more flexible seating options so they can stay focused for longer periods of time. Students will have the opportunity to sit on these cushions during independent reading, when completing classwork and during our carpet time for whole group instruction. Research shows that offering students flexible seating can help engage their brains and help them stay focused for longer periods of time. I feel that using these flexible seating options will increase engagement which will enhance my students' learning experience.
