Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of ELL and IEP learners at a Title I school in upper Manhattan.
We are working hard this year to foster a love of reading beyond testing and create lifelong readers!
My fourth graders are excited to grow as learners this year, particularly in developing their skills as readers. While many students come from difficult situations at home, they persist in coming to school. Many students entering my class are reading one to two grade levels below the expectation, continuing to need work on "learning to read" before they can work on "reading to learn." In spite of this, students remain enthusiastic when they find a new beloved series, or when they make a connection to character in a book.
My Project
At the beginning of the school year, students enter my classroom with a desire to read and write. Many students, however, struggle to remain focused in a classroom with 30 other people in the room. In order to refocus themselves, many students benefit from sensory input, such as seat cushions. These seats allow them to wiggle while they work without detracting from the quality of their reading or writing. Other students are overwhelmed by the visual busyness of a large classroom, and they prefer to read and write without distractions behind a privacy folder. These partitions also serve as mini reference pages for my students, as we can provide vocabulary lists, acronyms, and individual student goals within the folds. Additionally, some students benefit from reading e-books or using literacy programs such as iReady to stay engaged with their independent reading time in class. However, my students currently participate in the Accelerated Reader program, in which they take short quizzes about the books they have read. This means that the few functional laptops we have are usually busy, and there is a long wait for students to have a turn using our technology for reading. Having a group of tablets would greatly increase our capacity to keep all students productively engaged during the literacy block. By adding all of these resources to our classroom, we will help to meet the focus needs of all learners!
