Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a rural, Title I school district with 75% of my students labeled as economically disadvantaged and at risk of dropping out before graduation. This past year, some of my students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey as our county is prone to severe flooding. A majority of my students are enrolled in the English Language Learning Program and are in need of more visual ways of being taught to help learn math as they must master difficult concepts that produce high levels of anxiety.
Many of my students who are impacted by being homeless often come to school without basic supplies, experience hunger, and they are withdrawn and tend to draw attention away from them.
They often lack sleep from supporting their siblings at night and tend to fall asleep in class if they are not engaged. For these reasons, my district offers every child 100% free breakfast and lunch, a minimal dress code, and a partnership with the Houston Food Bank.
My students are eager to learn and grow in their mathematical journey each and every day; however, our lack of resources limits us.
My Project
Sitting still and concentrating is difficult for an adult much less a pre-teen. My students are active learners who need to be constantly moving to stay focused and engaged during intervention time to be able to improve their math skills.
My students have a difficult time trying to concentrate and learn difficult abstract math concepts required in 8th grade math, and they need the active sitting stools to be able to release the energy and lower anxiety by moving during small group intervention time.
My students love to have individualized instruction during small group, but any movement surrounded by 5 other students is distracting and with the SitWell adjustable sitting stools, they can move without interrupting their peers.
