My students create most of their work with pen and paper. It is difficult for them to share this work with their peers. A document camera would allow students to project information that they create in class, helping to foster a student-centered centered learning environment.
I teach 8th grade English and history (also called humanities core) at a large, urban, public middle school.
Our school serves a racially and socioeconomically diverse group of students. My classes include kids who struggle to reach proficiency, and kids of all backgrounds who excel. In the same classes, I have English language learners, as well as a number of special education students. A document camera would help me present material in a visual way that can help all types of learners, and allow students to present their own work and teach each other.
My Project
I use a lot of electronic methods to enhance the classroom learning environment, from video curricular content, to student and teacher presentations. I regularly make use of my laptop connected to a projector to deliver content and to engage in group instruction. Using the computer in this way enhances my ability to provide information/instruction to the students, but it does not allow a great avenue for students to share information that they create in class.
To support my students’ abilities to share their work and lead classes, I would like to use a document camera to facilitate classroom dialog. The document camera will be used with an LCD projector that the school already has, to project work that students produce either on the computer or with pen and paper, or any original documents that they bring into class. In this way students can help one another learn.
A document camera will help my students build leadership skills and increase their ownership of their education.
With your support, this critical tool will greatly enhance the education and engagement of these eighth graders at a critical juncture before they head off to high school.
