My students need a Peace Room to work to resolve external and internal conflict.

Our diverse population comes from across the city of Chicago. Some families live a half mile away, while others live 12 miles. Our magnet school has magnetic qualities, drawing families because of our rigorous standards, curriculum, and our supportive nature. While many of our students are highly intelligent, some are missing a social component.
Our supportive nature has lead us to create tiered supports for students with academic success but having limited social thinking skills.
In order to support the development of a well rounded student, appropriate social thinking skills must be taught, modeled and reviewed.
"Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace"

During the past several years, the staff at N. Academy has worked to shift the paradigm around behavior management and discipline. Staff at my school understand that behavioral expectations must be taught and modeled like academic subjects. To support this teaching of behavior and social skills, my school plans on devoting a classroom to be set up as a Peace Room.
The Peace Room will be a safe space for students, staff and parents to work together to resolve conflict in a calm and productive manner. This way, our community can learn and practice resolution skills. At another school, after a conflict occurs, students are given a consequence that may or may not resonate with the student. At my school, we look to support our students in a different way. Instead of opting for detentions or other punitive measures, administration and staff are focusing on restorative measures that teach social thinking skills. With these new skills, our students can work to prevent and avoid conflict by asking for help.
The school counselor will also use the Peace Room to mediate small groups to review and address social-emotion concerns that may be affecting their academic success. Monthly "Coffee with the Counselor" meetings will be organized in this space as well. These focus of the small groups and meetings will be based on a needs assessment and data.
The funding for this project will go to creating a welcoming, calm environment in one designated classroom. Items requested for this project include five convertible chairs and three rocking chairs for students to choose where they will be comfortable while participating, stools for a Peace Circle, and storage for materials for students to express emotions/feelings/point of view.
