My fourth grade group is a diverse mixture of amazing eager little minds ready to learn and explore. These students are excited and hungry for knowledge. They are a part of our Title I school. School supplies, clothing, shoes, and food are often in short supply for my students. Many of them come from high poverty situations that limit their access to educational resources such as technology and books.
My students would love to have immediate access to quality books and be able to use technology to explore the world around them.
We know that reading is one of the most powerful skills a person can have. It is a means of gaining information from the world around you. It is also a temporary escape because it opens the imagination and grants the reader endless possibilities. Quality books at a variety of reading levels, and the internet and technology in the classroom are extremely powerful and incredibly exciting to students. Let's face it, kids love computers and exploration. However, these materials are not readily available in every classroom.
My Project
There are many different reading abilities in our classroom, and therefore, we need a variety of different leveled reading materials to meet the needs of all the students. The students really love to explore topics such as sports, animals, countries, careers, and other factual subjects that help them understand the world around them.
Having immediate access to quality leveled nonfiction books is the easiest way to provide my students with the information they crave.
The Eyewitness Nonfiction reader sets from Lakeshore are some of the best resources because they offer the students facts and details about various subjects and also include amazing text features such as diagrams, illustrations, maps, charts and graphs which add additional meaning to the understanding of the text. Reading these quality nonfiction books also exposes students to a variety of text structures which helps them improve their own writing skills when they try to communicate their understanding of topics.
My students would love to have such interesting and engaging text to explore during our reading instruction to help them learn more about some of their favorite topics.
