Hi! I am a second grade teacher on the South Side of Chicago. The biggest focus of my year is helping my students become confident, fluent readers. Often, my students come to me barely reading or reading in small, unsure voices. I have found that many of the children start to read at a faster rate once they begin to hear themselves excel. I would like to implement a 20 minute block into my reading schedule, where children read fluency cards aloud to partners and eventually to the class. These cards are arranged, so each child would be working exactly at their instructional level. As they would continue to practice and master a series of cards, they would move up to the next level. This way, they will continue to experience success, leading to more confidence and a more positive experience with reading in general. Also, reading aloud to a partner and/or the class frequently will increase the students' reading volume. Reading is a vital skill my students need to be successful in their lives. It opens doors to Math, Science, Social Studies, college and independence. It often feels like a race against time to bring my students up to their grade level by the end of the year, but I believe this program can help bridge that gap. Please help me to help my students... they are smart, excited children who deserve every opportunity to excel.
