Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students mostly come from low-income homes with limited resources, and attend our magnet school in their own neighborhood. They rely on us, their school and teachers, to provide the tools they need to grow into critical, independent thinkers.
My students are funny, independent, energetic children.
Each class has their own struggles and triumphs, but overall they are eager to learn and thrive when given a surmountable challenge. They love technology, playing games, learning new morning meeting activities, and scientific inquiry. You should see our model bird beaks!
My Project
My students work weekly on awesome, adaptive technology programs. We are so lucky to have Chromebooks with literacy and math-based, differentiated, teacher-driven programs like iReady, MobyMax, and MyON.
Technology provides an opportunity for individually differentiated learning.
I set lessons in reading and math for specific groups of students, and individual students in some cases. While they work through an online lesson, I can teach another small group a specific skill. Later, I track their successes and struggles to pinpoint exactly where a student or group needs support to move forward.
Without appropriate headphones, focusing can be very tricky. Some of the programs have silly characters or read-alouds, even games to motivate students toward the next level in a lesson. With students all working on different lessons, the classroom noise becomes distracting for everyone. These headphones will change the game during literacy and math time, and allow everyone to focus on learning.
