Being a teacher in a low income school brings its own unique challenges, nowhere near the challenges that my students face both in and out of school. With that, I like to make my classroom a place that feels safe and welcoming to all children. My students are creative and thoughtful, and they come to my room each day ready to learn. They have a passion for reading, love to read and be read to daily!
Being a special education inclusion teacher, some of my students are reading far below grade level which sometimes leads to their frustration with reading because they can’t find interesting books on their level.
I would love to continue to foster their love for reading and watch them become the best readers and people they can be!
My Project
Fidgeting is a coping mechanism. It's not a problem. It is a solution. Fidgeting helps improve focus. ADHD or not, we all have this thing called floating attention. Most of our attention is on one thing, but we have a little bit that is always trying to see what is going on around us. That is floating attention. Most children usually do not have a filter for floating attention and notice everything. That is why they need fidget tools to give their floating attention something to focus on so they can concentrate on what they really need to be doing.
By giving a child a mindless fidget tool, the child's brain is like, "Hey, floating attention, I see you and I'm going to give you a job.
This is your job. Our job, as educators, is to find fidget tools that work for each child and don't distract anyone else. A fidget tool provides an outlet for excess energy, making it easier for a child to control or reduce their impulsive reaching out and touching everything around them.
