As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences for arts education.
My students are creative, clever and very talented.
They like to move, they love to encourage, support each other and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Dedicated artists... That is how I describe my students. We are a small group from a community of dance students at CCMHSl, a public school in Florida. My students eat, sleep & breathe dance.
My desire for my students is that they receive quality & diversified training that not only helps make them better dancers, but better humans too.
I am constantly striving to find ways for them to have as many different experiences as possible. Their involvement in the arts helps them to succeed in every aspect of their lives including academically & professionally. Supporting this group is investing in future artists as well as future leaders.
Being able to attend the National High School Dance Festival will allow my dancers to take classes with students from all over the US as well as from other countries. These classes are taught by college professors and company directors which exposes them to very high-quality training. This trip is a wonderful opportunity for my dancers to meet other students like them (young artists). There is also a large audition for students to receive acceptance into college programs and summer programs. This helps students who normally cannot afford to travel to all of these auditions in person, be eligible for as many programs and scholarships as possible.
