Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When discussing biological classification, I asked my students how they would classify themselves. My first response was from a quiet boy in the back who said, "Hmm below the poverty line". Everyone chuckled at his response, however, his words ring true. My students ARE below the poverty line, yet they DESERVE a better classification, one that fits their common values.
It's simple.
My students are HARD WORKING and value a strong work ethic as they are both in high school and in college.
Yes, 83% of my students are economically disadvantaged, yet that doesn't stop them from coming to school with a 98% attendance rate.
Yes, 100% of my students are just kids, yet they are extremely motivated and are earning an associates degree in science or engineering.
Yes, 99% of my students are Hispanic, with some language barriers, yet that doesn't ward them from keeping up with an academically challenging accelerated high school program.
Yes indeed, my students ARE special.
My Project
IFLY San Antonio provides an excellent STEM-focused program where students do the following: learn physics and engineering concepts, use their body measurements to calculate their terminal velocity, and finally experience terminal velocity in a high-powered wind tunnel.
My students will get to experience the thrill of flying and create special memories as they watch their friends lift off the ground by fast moving air molecules.
They will reinforce concepts studied in the classroom and see STEM in action. Most importantly, they will apply their STEM skills and knowledge in an environment other than school.
Someone once told me that students don't remember lessons, they remember experiences. As an educator, it's my responsibility to provide them with educational experiences that inspire and spark critical thought. With your generous donation, you will give students an experience they couldn't afford. You will make teenagers smile (which is tough) and bring joy to the hearts of their teachers. Help me prove to my students that their HARD WORK pays off and our community believes in giving back.
