Flying Flowers Children are captivated by the magic of butterflies in the garden! Here at Sunset Ridge Elementary in Pacifica, California the Kindergartens have started a Butterfly Garden but we would like to know more about butterflies and ways to attract them. My Kindergarten class of 20 little ones are delighted every time they see a butterfly. These children come from homes that often don't allow their children outside out of fear. Many are English Language learners and almost half are on our free and reduced lunch program. Families are living on the edge and one small crisis can push them into chaos. The simple pleasures of being in a flower garden or watching a butterfly fluttering over the playground are exciting and memorable events that are recorded in pictures and words in their journals or during group writing. I would like to add some special items that will enhance this experience for them. A butterfly feeder, poster and puzzle and an informational book would greatly enhance their experiences. The feeder would attract even more butterflies to our garden and the book and puzzle/poster would allow the children to become familiar with different types of butterflies and encourage them to be gentler with insects they find. Creating little stewards for our planet, wanting to care for "Flying Flowers", is a satisfying goal and I know the lessons learned here will carry over into their lives in years to come!
