Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I am one of three Track and Field coaches at my school which recently just was granted a team for this spring season. We are a brand new program that consists of 3 schools which are from the same neighborhood We are the only sports program in the city of this kind. Our program is made up of three separate high schools within a couple street blocks of one another. We are in our first year as a new identity and trying our best to build a well-developed athletic program.
As a newly established program, we have had a lot of purchasing issues. Our priority was uniforms first which involved buying new uniforms for 5 different sports teams. As a result of this, we had to cut back on equipment purchases and other expenses. There have been times where the head coach of the teams had to purchase equipment, officials, etc. in order for the team to compete.
Track and Field was extremely affected, because there are so many different events and equipment to buy that it was almost impossible to make it happen. Fortunately through many great people and support, we were able to start a team.
We would like to be able to service as many students as possible, but it is hard to add field events if the athletes cannot practice prior to the meet. We do not own one discus for our players to practice with, which would allow them to compete. There have been a number of students interested in the event, but unable to enter.
Track and Field is one of the sports that allows many different types of students to succeed at something due to the large number of different events. With just one discus, we would be able to add a brand new event to our program that would over the years eventually service a huge number of student-athletes.
With your help you will make it possible for many students on our team now and the tons a long the way to experience something they never thought they could. Maybe you will be responsible for the next Olympic record in the discus.
