Flutes and Xylophones: Math, Music, Physics and FUN!

Help me give my students the materials needed to build PVC pipe flutes and xylophones with their math, music and physics class. It will be a community building activity that focuses on Common Core Standard F-BF 2.

My Project

Students will use arithmetic formulas to model and then build musical instruments. They will create flutes and xylophones after calculating the vibrational frequencies to create instruments. The students will then cut holes to make these frequencies in the flute or cut the lengths to make the frequencies for a xylophone. The students will make videos explaining how they made their instruments as a team and play a song together when they have completed their instruments.

Projects that are interdisciplinary help students connect and apply the content they are learning to the real world and learn this more deeply.
