My elementary school has a diverse population of students. We have qualified for funding so that all of our students have access to free breakfast and lunch! This is very exciting and an important first step to meeting the basic needs of many of our students. Many students are from various countries around the world (several having landed in Charlottesville as refugees from war-torn parts of the world), many experience stress in their home lives every day, and some students live what many would consider a "normal" American childhood.
Despite their differences, my students all have a few things in common: they share the desire to learn, to feel safe, to be loved, and to be accepted.
Most importantly, being a student at our school means that you are part of the same family...we strive to live out our school motto "We are Family" each day.
My Project
Many of my students have the desire to read, but struggle with reading grade-level texts with fluency and accuracy. As you can imagine, this can be frustrating for them and, as a result, it makes it difficult for them to enjoy reading. Read-along books are a wonderful way to introduce students to books above their independent reading level that they may not be able to otherwise access. Listening to fluent reading introduces students to new vocabulary, expands their knowledge on various subjects, helps them decode unfamiliar words, promotes critical listening skills, and it's also just plain fun!
