I teach two classes of twenty 1st graders. I teach math, science and social studies to both classes, my students are very hands-on. We spend a lot of time working in small groups and at stations. My students come from very diverse backgrounds, as I teach at a Title I school. My school being a Title I school means that more than 60% of our students are eligible for free-and-reduced price lunch. Many of our students are children of active duty military members, as we are located close to two different Air Force Bases here in Florida. This means that many students are having to deal with parents who are deployed, or are new to the area. I also teach students who have a variety of learning styles, this includes students who are considered ESE and ELL. Some of my ELL students are immigrants from other countries, and are assimilating into a new culture and are learning English for the first time, as some of their parents do not even speak English. All of my students, regardless of their backgrounds, are very enthusiastic and really love learning.
My Project
Being fluent in Math is very important across all grade levels, however I feel it is very important for students to start working on strategies to increase their fluency at a young age. My first graders could really benefit from this project because it will provide them with a Daily Math Fluency Kit for 1st grade.
This Daily Math Fluency Kit will allow students to develop numeracy and the ability to use mathematical relationships to reason with numbers and numerical concepts.
It allows students to use various visual models and manipulatives to help them master fluency strategies.
Fluency is more than just using flashcards to memorize facts. We want students to be able to build a deeper understanding of various strategies that allow them to become fluent, while also understanding the math concepts at the same time. This Fluency Kit will allow me to spend time working on this with my students everyday throughout the school year.
