My students need headphones so they work independently at a fluency center. This will help increase their reading fluency and comprehension.

My Students

My students are fourth and fifth graders. Our town is small with a very diverse population. They are all reading at least 1 - 2 years below grade level. And many of them have been reading below grade level for several years.

Reading is not their favorite thing to do.

These students struggle with fluency, decoding of words and comprehension. They know this about themselves and don't enjoy reading. My goal is to improve their confidence in themselves as readers and develop a love of reading.

My Project

I work with fourth and fifth grade Tier 3 reading students. These students are typically reading 1 - 2 years below grade level. Reading fluency is an issue for most of my students. They spend a lot of effort trying to figure out words and read word by word. This can affect their reading comprehension. I would like to create a fluency center where they can listen to a fluent reader and help increase their own reading fluency rate.

This fluency center would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the area of reading fluency.

Students who are fluent readers also have better reading comprehension.
