Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On the west side of the city in an under resourced neighborhood, my sixth grade students brim with enthusiasm and audacious goals. They comprehend the need for education and work diligently to receive it.
As research shows, their ability to exceed academically is heavily dependent on their literacy skills. Thus, in our classroom, we concentrate on fluency and reading comprehension.
Our education system and our world require excellent literacy skills. From directions on a map to employment contracts to credit reports, my students desperately need the intellectual tools essential for reading. In order to target one aspect of their literacy skills through an engaging, technological medium, I request the materials needed in order to create an interactive Recording Studio.
At this studio, students will read maps, songs, books, and an eclectic mix of other materials into a cassette recorder. Students will then have the opportunity to repeatedly record and listen to themselves read a passage until they reach their fluency goal for the month. This method of improving fluency is backed by much academic reserach.
The students and I will partner to track their progress for the duration of the year. That way we will have measurable data to celebrate their achievements and target their areas of need.
Over the course of the year, the students and I will be able to measure the impact of the center on their reading skills. Yet, the center's benefit will reach beyond one academic year. It will aid in instilling internal motivation in students to improve their fluency and it will prove to them that working hard can bring about positive, intrinsic rewards.
The short and long term consequenes of this center on my students' academic careers is the reason I request funding for a Fluency Studio. Thank you for your consideration!
