My job as an interventionist is to work with small groups of students who are struggling to meet grade level expectations of their English and Language Arts skills. These students are reading one to two grade levels behind and are lacking parental support at home. Most of these students consider school as their "safe place" because of the struggles they have to experience at home. Often times, they experience a loss of one or both parents' presence in the home at some point in the school year. These emotional effects take a large toll on the students' motivation and performance.
My Project
My students have been working hard on improving their reading fluency and comprehension skills. We have been practicing repeated readings to build successful, fluent reading skills at their appropriate reading level. Students can use the sound phones to listen to themselves read and begin to learn self-monitoring skills. They can also practice positive feedback to their peers in order to notice what makes a good reader. Interacting with sight words also helps build fluency. The Sight Word Daily Activity Journals allow students to have an organized approach at this practice.
These materials will allow my students to practice reading material at their instructional level- silently, aloud with a partner and guided instruction with the teacher.
They give them a more interactive approach on learning these important reading skills.
