My love of learning is what brought me to JBK8 which is a high poverty, inner city school. My students do not love school and do not always love to learn. I would like to help them find a love of reading and to find books that can help them dream. We all should have the opportunity to read books.
My students' school was closed last year due to funding.
Our district decided to put them at a middle school with low enrollment. Our building is now a K-8 building. I decided to leave my first grade job at a highly proficient school and help create this new learning environment. I saw it as such a fun challenge. These kiddos are 100% free and reduced lunch and need to learn to love education as much as teachers do. I want them to be able to pick up books and find that love of reading and learning. A lot of them are very behind academically and have very low reading rates. I am doing Daily Five with them and need to have more books for them to listen to that will build their fluency. I love them like they are my own and buy a lot out of my own pocket for them. It would be so nice for them to have different choices of books to listen to so that they can read along with someone reading to them. They need so much repeat practice to learn - This Read-Along Library would give them so much!
My Project
My students will be able to listen to books on cds and read along as they are listening. Research has shown that following along while listening has in increase in reading behaviors. Students love choices and there are many book titles in the resource I have found. This set of books on cd will give my students an opportunity to listen together to a book, while I can still meet with other students. I have the cd and headphones, I just need more books for choices. My students travel through stations in Daily 5 Reading and this will help them to have one more opportunity to read and listen to someone. They need to do this multiple times during the day. It is so important to listen to someone read to you when you are a first grader. I'm not sure what happens once my kiddos leave me. I hope that someone reads to them, but I can only control what happens when they are with me. Multiple repeat practice is a must for my population of students.
I have the ability to work with some older students as well as younger who do not always love to read or have anyone at home who will read to them.
I am only able to control what happens to them when they are with me. The sense of urgency with my kids is huge and they need so much repeat to learn. They need to be exposed to someone who loves reading and will give them EVERY opportunity to be readers and writers. Consider my students and help me instill a love of reading and learning for them.
