Help me give my students fun, motivational materials to help them with comprehension and fluency. The Reading Comprehension Activity will help our students to work on remembering what they read in a fun, inviting way.
As a reading specialist, I work with struggling readers for grades 2-5. Many of my students come from low income families and homes where they may not have all the supports they need due to heavy responsibilities, not sure how to work with their children, or not having the time. Our fifth grade students are at the age where they understand that reading groups mean that they might be behind. Some of our fifth graders don't like coming with us or lack the motivation, because they may be embarrassed that they have to come with us. Many of them are hard workers, but need that extra push to meet their goals before leaving us for middle school! Our kiddos really need your support!
My Project
The Fluency cards and phonics game will help students work on becoming fluent readers. The Fluency games will help our readers to see how reading texts over and over and becoming comfortable with reading a passage will help them, not only read more fluently (not like a robot or at at a slow pace), but will remember what they have read, which is a lifelong skill. The phonics game will also help with fluency, if they can remember the phonics rules, they will also be able to read words without sounding them out.
Fluency does go hand in hand with comprehension.
If you read slowly and have to sound out almost every single word, it is hard to remember what you've read in the previous sentences or chapters, because it takes so long to read words/sentences. My students do struggle with reading and reading fluently, so that results in a struggle in remembering what you read, which is an everyday, lifelong skill. These items requested will help them be successful and confident readers and confident with their comprehension skills.
Fluency and comprehension are both important skills that our school focuses on and is in our School Improvement Plan, so these materials would really benefit ALL students in our school.
