My students include a diverse group of self-contained 5th-grade students. Our school is in a rural area and has a continually growing population, soaring now to over 900 students! A significant percentage of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and many lack the critical background knowledge and experiences that many of us take for granted.
Also, I teach in a Title I, high-poverty school in rural NC.
My students have demonstrated a genuine enthusiasm for learning, especially reading. Many of them blossomed, in terms of their reading comprehension, and I know they will continue to grow with a new section to our classroom library!
My Project
Unfortunately, we have battling the Flu and other germs in our classroom, and our supplies are depleted of essential items to keep our classroom clean and healthy. To keep my students healthy, and focused on academics, we are in dire need of Lysol wipes, disinfectant spray, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, and tissues. This year has been a struggle with fighting airborne germs.
Additionally, our new classroom has had a myriad of issues with the heating/air conditioning unit, which adds fuel to the fire with the germs.
The stagnant, humid air creates optimal conditions to spread bacteria and viruses. However, we would like our main focus in Science spent on delving into deep concepts and engaging experiments. Having these basic, yet, essential supplies would be invaluable to the health and wellness of the students!
