Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from seventh to eighth grade. We are a diverse population with students from many different cultural backgrounds.
Our school is about 46% percent socioeconomically disadvantaged.
This means that about half of our students are on a free or reduced-cost lunch program.
In October 2017, our school and community faced something that we never thought we would, devastating fires in the city limits of Santa Rosa. We had many students and staff lose their homes due to the fires. Our school and all schools in our district were closed for three weeks and so many have lost so much. This month, in November 2019, we again experienced a wildfire in Northern California that disrupted district and instruction--many of us had a mandatory evacuation. I will be getting students every year for the next decade who survived a traumatic experience when they had to evacuate down a fiery road and some whose houses burned down.
Students need to feel safe and secure at their school--it is their second home. Our community is filled with kind, giving students who deserve a little goodness from kind people like you!
My Project
Our students have been through a lot this school year, including the Kincaide Fire and the loss of instruction. We need to catch up with our learning, and one of the ways to do that is to work together.
Collaboration will help us get things done and a large table with chairs will help us do just that.
Right now, we have old student desks that are fine for traditional lectures, but they are not conducive to group work. Students sometimes need to work together to create projects. A new table and chairs will help them share their unique perspectives and gain new insights in the process.
