Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are first-time school learners who are extremely active, motivated, excited, and may I say, adorable. A majority of my students come to my class in August knowing little or no English.
A majority of my students are Latino with three students who were born in Bangladesh.
All of my students come from families whose income falls below the poverty line. Many of my children live with multiple families in small apartments where space is at a premium.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to have taught at my school since its inception. The school offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our pre K to 5th-grade students and often these are the only meals they eat in a day. The students in my class are eager to learn through motivating higher level activities. Unfortunately, I have only an hour of teacher assistant time twice a week for my active and needy four-year-olds and keeping everyone on task and learning can often be a challenge.
The more stimulating, hands-on manipulatives and centers I can rotate in my classroom, the more time I can devote to each student's individual needs.
My Project
The four year old children in my class are truly first time learners in a school setting. It is amazing how they move from activity to activity at lightening speed.
I realized that my students are in need of multiple experiences building and creating in a group setting.
Unfortunately these little ones are still learning how to care for learning manipulatives so they need tough and resilient learning tools that are difficult to destroy yet easy to work with.
These manipulatives definitely fit the bill. The children will be able to create, stack, and build using the bristle blocks and stackers and best of all there will be enough for a group of 6 children so there will be no fighting over pieces!
I would be so grateful if you could help me teach my children social emotional skills such as sharing and cooperating by contributing to this project. I thank you so much in advance. I know my students will be thrilled to be able to create and play again and again with these tools.
