This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Pre-K students come from very diverse backgrounds. They are considered high-risk learners due to their socio-economic lifestyles. Many of my students live in single-parent households or are being raised by their grandparents. These types of home challenges qualify them for my program.
My school is a located in inner-city Detroit on a block that is surrounded by abandoned homes and vacant lots.
Despite the location, my school has been recognized as a high performing school by the State of Michigan. My colleagues and I continue to put our students first no matter the challenges facing our school district.
My Project
The custodial services are not the best at my school. Many mornings we come into a class with dirty floors and carpet. We don't have working vacuums and no funds for carpet cleaning services, so many times my preschoolers have to sit on dirty carpets for their lessons.
Having a classroom vacuum and carpet shampooer will help me provide a clean and safe learning environment for my students.
My assistants and I will be able to quickly and efficiently be able to tidy up the classroom on those days when the custodians don't. The tools will already be at our finger tips, so when the need arises we can provide a clean learning environment for the students.
