Teamwork, hand-eye-coordination, and aerobic exercise are all amazing priceless lessons taken away in our hockey unit. Middle school students really get their first exposure to team sports in middle school. Students not only need the courage to try out for team sports, but to stay physically fit.
My students are eager and active and ready to try new things.
They come from all backgrounds and cultures, but sport unites them in so many ways. Our school promotes respect, and this class promotes teamwork, communication, and fun! This year our class is trying a new unit to inspire them, and keep them engaged in physical activity. Many of them are new to many of the sports we play, but they are interested in learning and need the support of their peers to develop their confidence.
My Project
The students are learning how to play floor hockey. They will learn the parts of the hockey stick, the origin of the sport itself, and the many rules that have evolved it. Additionally, they will learn how to stick handle, pass, trap and shoot. Yes, shooting, we are in need of goals to make our tournament more realistic and to practice our shooting. The equipment managers will be excited about setting up our tournament goals, and students will also be more engaged with actual goals to shoot on throughout the unit.
I have been a teacher for almost 20 years, and I teach many subjects.
Our physical education program has to fundraise in order to get needed equipment, and our equipment reaches the entire school population, over 800 students. Not only are we teaching the skills of the games, but students are learning to work with one another toward a common goal, how to settle disputes that arise, how to problem solve, and how to take risks in learning new things.
