Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are striving to create lives for themselves that surpass those of their parents; many will be the first generation to go to college or will be taking over the family business and trying to make it grow. They are very hard workers and come from families that value hard work and education. They are here in the U.S. to support both themselves and their families back home. Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students are very unique and come from many different countries [Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Germany, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Pacific Islands, Korea, China, Egypt, and other countries].
Many are first or second generation in the U.S. and a large population do not speak English at home as their primary language.
I am an assistant mentor on the Robotics team and help them with presenting to the judges, creating documents, and overall team aesthetics.
My Project
We have a total of 50 FLLJr teams that our high school students support during the summer. Each member of the robotics team is the mentor to a group of 4-6 students, grades K through 3. They mentor them and do the FLLJr Curriculum with them.
Part of the FLLJr curriculum is to create a Show-Me Poster and to present at an Expo; the Montclair Society of Engineers is hosting a FLLJr Expo this summer and we would like all 50 teams to attend.
The topic this year is about water and water systems. The students will be learning about the water insects and how they interact with the ecosystem. They will be building a model of the insect and telling the "judges" about their model and research. Each team will talk about how the water goes from the lakes and rivers to the homes and will discuss insects, animals, and bacteria.
This is part 5 of a multi-part project to cover the expenses for 10 of our 50 teams to be part of the FLLJr Expo.We have already had 40 of our 50 teams funded, thanks to Orkin. Please help us fund the last 10 teams. The kids need team shirts, lunch, trophies, and the Show-Me Poster supplies. This project also covers the basic registration for the event.
Thank you for supporting us and helping the high school students mentor the little ones.
