The Earth Science Regents can be quite difficult for special needs students, but by changing my classroom to a more student-centered approach, my students will be able to master the content at a higher level and receive much more individualized attention.
I teach NYS Regents Earth Science and Environmental Science, both in an Inclusive setting (I have a special education teacher with me all day) at the high school level in NY.
My students are typically at many different levels of learning and require differentiated instruction to keep them engaged and successful in this challenging course. In order to allow them to work at their own pace while meeting all of the goals of the course, I would like to implement mastery learning techniques, combined with differentiated learning opportunities and a 'flipped' classroom approach. In order to accomplish this, I need help acquiring some additional technology. Ideally we would have 10-12 laptops/tablets available for student use but I can make it work with 3 Chromebook computers to start. Please consider helping me take my classes to the next level as we work towards college and career-readiness skills and increasing student interest and engagement in the sciences! -
My Project
Using these Chromebooks, my students will be able to access online resources to enhance their experience in the Earth Science course, including viewing teacher-prepared videos of course content, webquests, animations of abstract concepts, creating projects, using office presentation software to write research reports, creating blogs that tie real-world events to the curriculum.
As a science teacher in a collaborative and inclusive setting, my students come from all walks of life and varied learning levels.
By flipping my classroom to a student-centered approach, my students will become more invested in their learning experiences as they have the opportunity to choose from differentiated tasks to meet their learning objectives. My goal is for my students to develop a love for learning science while engaging in an individualized experience that meets their needs.
