Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am creating a flipped math class! Students will take notes for homework from a pre-recorded video that I post on our class website, and use class time the next day to apply those skills. 100 students in four tenth grade Algebra 2 classes will be watching these videos —videos made possible by the materials in this project. These students need more instructional time to master Algebra 2 skills and this project creates that time for practice. The flipped classroom will give students more hands-on support, more real-time feedback on their work, more differentiation, and more independent note-taking and organizational skills.
My Project
A large portion of students in my lower level Algebra 2 classes struggle with attendance. When students miss class time they miss instruction, which creates gaps in learning, and this in turn creates frustration with math, not because they can’t do it, but because they’ve missed the class conversation on the reasoning behind that skill. Creating these digital lessons will capture that valuable conversation centered on the “why” behind the mathematics, providing all students, present or not, with equal access to class content. The students’ role and my role will change through this innovative “flip” of my Algebra 2 classroom. Essentially, class would now be a 46-minute work-intensive practice session, in which students spend every minute in group work and individual practice on skills learned the night before. Just as athletes know the rules of their sport before practice, and then strengthen their team strategies and individual skills during practice—my students will know the “rules” of each math skill before class, and they will master those skills through in-class practice.
