Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with 23 beginning ESL (English Language Learning) students. Most of these students do not speak any English and are extremely excited to learn. Some of these students have never attended school before and come from families who immigrated to the US recently. Many of them come from low income households, and we all know that education is the best way to help these students. Our school is a Title 1 school and all of the students qualify for free lunch.
I want my students to be able to reach their fullest potential.
This, however, requires for me to have materials that spark interest and motivation.
This is my second year teaching and I am still working on filling my classroom with items to promote engagement and make my students want to come to class and be excited to learn!
My Project
There materials will make a difference in my students' learning because many of them come to 3rd grade reading on Kindergarten level. Third grade is the first year that they are required to take the state assessments which is a big task to get our students prepared for. To work towards mastering the assessment, my students need to learn many reading skills. However, they have so much energy that it is often hard to get them to focus on reading for more than 5 minutes. The Gaiam stay-n-play yoga ball, will help my students to expel that energy and keep their focus and attention much longer which will in turn help them to gain more reading skills for their state assessments!
I also have many students in my class who have sensory needs and need the wobble cushion to meet those needs.
The wobble cushion helps the students to focus and stay in their designated seats while also meeting their sensory needs.
