Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My STAR students are resilient and creative, but as a Title-1, high-risk public school, 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our school is embarking on a new way of teaching and have started the process to become a STEAM school!
We desire flex seating to be able to open our new maker Studio with a 21st century mindset, however, the funds for these specific materials are lacking. These STARS are eager to learn and try new things in our freshly minted maker Studio!
It is a requirement that students know how to create, problem solve and think critically, but we don't have all the furniture in the new Studio to support the development of these skills! Supporting our maker Studio will enhance the learning of every student, from Kindergarten to 5th grade, at my school!
My Project
If you have ever been into a Starbucks coffee shop you will notice all the varieties of seating available to the customer! There are stools and couches, benches and high chairs. The purpose is to allow the customer to choose their seating for optimal enjoyment in the consumer experience. This is the same model I want to follow in the STEAM Studio for my students!!
The stools, cushions, and floor seats are all flexible seating options that will provide the gross motor and stimulation necessary to guide my students to complete independent and group work with autonomy.
These materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help provide my students flexibility in their learning while in the STEAM Studio. For example, while I'm teaching a lesson on bridges and engineering, one of my students may be having difficulty maintaining their space and needing gross motor activity. This student can choose a seat that best suits their learning, while others may choose a different flex seating option, but all are working. The flexible seating options stimulate physical comfort, activate the mind, and ready students for learning.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues, provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need, and increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
