Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Twelve out of the eighteen students in my room are speakers of another language. The students struggle with learning essential reading kills, but they are eager and excited to learn. Many come from homes where very little English is spoken so parents are not able to help them with basic reading skills and easy sight words. My students are all on free lunches. My students struggle with phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and vocabulary. So within my classroom I have created different learning centers to maximize their learning. I really need the wobble seats, portable CD players, nonfiction books on CD, and fiction books on CD to reach a variety of different learning styles. The listening center, books on CD centers, and portable CD players will increase students’ understanding and make learning complicated reading skills fun and engaging!
My Project
Raising reading levels and building fluency is essential in helping students progress in reading. The nonfiction books on CD will help my struggling readers to say the correct pronunciation of the words, to learn new vocabulary with strong picture support, and allow them to reread the book multiple times! The portable CD player will allow me to differentiate instruction and students to work independently. The wobble seats allows students to be able to have flexible seating anywhere in the room which makes the whole room a learning center. The wobble seats are great for helping squirming kids wiggle and learn. Students are able to listen to stories on or above their reading levels. The fiction books on CD will help them to develop comprehension skills, sequencing skills, strengthen story retelling, and help them to analysis the characters feelings and behaviors. The book on CD allows students to reread these stories over and over for better comprehension and builds fluency!
