Help me give my students different options for flexible seating like flex bands, wobble chairs, and floor cushions in order to help them feel comfortable, move around while they learn, and aid in their focus and productivity.
I teach in an integrated co-taught 7th grade classroom in New York City. In our English Language Arts classroom, our goal is for students to read and write more and to WANT to read and write more. Many of our students have difficulty sitting in a traditional chair and learning in traditional ways. Because of this, they often feel like they do not like to read or write, and many students have had a lot of experience with failure because they have not fit into the traditional model of education. When there have been opportunities for choice and more flexibility to meet their needs, students have been able to thrive.
Creating spaces in the room that meet their needs and where students can feel comfortable to learn can then help them focus on other goals - reading, writing, learning, and feeling success!
My Project
These materials will allow my students to feel a greater level of comfort, accessibility, and choice in my English Language Arts classroom. Many of my students have experienced a great deal of failure throughout their academic careers because they have not fit into the "one size fits all" approach.
My goal is to normalize the idea for students that people learn in different ways, and that this should be celebrated!
By creating a more welcoming environment that addresses my students' needs in various ways and gives them options of flexible seating in the classroom - such as wobble stools, floor cushions, and flex bands - students will be able to choose what works best for them in order to achieve more academic success.
