I teach an absolutely amazing group of second graders. I usually have between twenty-two to twenty-eight students in my second grade class. They come into second grade excited to learn. As an educator, it is so important for us to keep that spark alive!
Our school has a high population of military families as our school is located down the road from a military base.
Many of the students have had to balance school and home life while having a parent deployed. My students have a pure passion for learning that inspires me to be a better teacher!
My Project
In second grade, it is very hard for students to sit for extended periods at traditional desks. Many of the students become fidgety and struggle to pay attention and get the work done!
One solution to help with the wiggles is offering students flexible seating.
It is most important that students learn and reach their maximum potential. Flexible seating will help allow them to do this! I have already added some new seating options but unfortunately, don't have the funds to purchase these rolling and adjustable computer chairs that I know my students will love.
When completing independent work throughout the day, students will have their choice of choosing where they will work best. Will it be the new computer chairs? Will they choose the stool because they prefer working at a higher table? Will they choose the cushions because they prefer to sit on the floor and work at a low table? Will they choose to stand or lay on our rug? What makes a flexible seat classroom so exciting is that the students can choose what works best for them!
Studies show children need to get their blood pumping throughout the school day and giving them the ability to stand up, lay down or move in their seat is highly effective. Being able to have continuous movement while sitting relaxes the right side of the brain, leading to better focus. It is shown to help people that are diagnosed with all forms of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and children on the spectrum. It gives them an outlet to move around without distracting other students. The benefits are very clear and can result in the mental/physical improvement and increase the academic achievement of many students!
