Mrs. Luangxay from Lexington SC is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Flexing into Second

My students need choice with flexible seating. I want to create not only choice but also choices that are comfy and inviting. The futon has been a wonderful spot for many students in fellow teachers' classrooms.

My Students

I teach ELA, math, science, and social studies for engaged and creative second graders. My school is an elementary school located in rural Lexington, SC. Our school is stable place for the kids in our community. They come into school with various background experiences, many of them being difficult. Often their situations cause them to be distracted or emotionally detached from their learning. Despite their situations my students are eager to learn and do their best. About 60% of the students are below the poverty line and many students receive snack sacks to take home on the weekend.

My goal is to build an environment where students have choice and joy in learning.

I am passionate about this goal because so many students do not or have the guidance to learn how to choose what is good for them. As a teacher, I am up facilitating, moving, and discussing throughout the day. Students, however, are bound to a desk and chair. I feel that creating an environment that is comfortable yet conducive to learning will help students to develop the skills needed to learn!

My Project

My project is geared to creating a classroom that empowers students to make choices about their learning. Not only are students able to have a warm and inviting environment but they are also learning how to make good choices for themselves. This projects will allow students to grow socially, emotionally, and educationally. I am very passionate about creating an environment that students enjoy coming to. The futon couch that was chosen will be placed in our reading nook. It will be an option for students to choose to read and work at daily. There are also other options like bounce balls, standing tables, wobble stools, etc.
