My students are regular kids learning Mandarin, and expanding their world view- right in South Carolina! When they reach middle school, they will have the opportunity to travel to China like I did last year with my daughter. For now, they can travel through quality literature. We read books that take them all over the world, not just China, and we need flexible seating for reading and work time in our classroom.
Although my kids are special for their bilingualism and their world views, they are no different than any other kids in this suburban area close to the capital.
We are a free public charter school and all parents have to do is provide transportation to our school. Our population is ethnically, socio-economically, and needs diverse.
My Project
My students love to get cozy with some good books! We've got the books, thanks to years of collecting. We've got the space, thanks to a new building and a homey decorating scheme. We've even got some stuffed animals to cozy with! What we need are soft, portable reclining seats to chill in. Just give us our books and our personal space and let our minds do the rest.
While most kids are getting their reading on, a small group can get some focused instruction with me, their teacher.
We just need some cool wobble stools that slide right up under the table when we're not meeting there. Then we can pull them out, plop down, and read with a small group. That's another place the magic happens and the right kind of seating will invite, excite, and support our curious minds!
