I teach in a rural 3-5 level building that has approximately 450 students enrolled. I have 22 students of my own, but often see 42 students throughout the day due to co-teaching. I switch for social studies and science with my co-teacher who has 20 of her own students. Between all of the students that I see, there are many diverse learners that have needs I try to meet. Specifically the learning environment.
My students are kind hearted, strong willed, and eager to learn, but their movement needs can hinder their learning!
In my classroom we strive on the ability to create our own working space that best fits "what I need. " Students have the opportunity to move around my classroom during work time to increase their focus and productivity. This, however, does not always take away their need for continuous movement. Laying on the floor with a clipboard may be a more comfortable working space, but my students may still have a case of the wiggles that is decreasing their focus!
My Project
Currently, my classroom has limited alternative seating options. Unfortunately, I only have traditional chairs and mainly traditional desks. It is known that kids have a hard time sitting in one place all day; I even have a hard time sitting all day! If sitting still is hindering their learning, it should not be the expectation. Often times I find my students standing at their own desks, bopping from leg to leg, tapping their feet, or laying on the ground to increase their focus and engagement level. Several students pace the back and sides of my room to keep their legs going while trying to listen before working in a stationary spot.
As their teacher, I want to provide the most successful working environment for all of my learners.
With minimal seating options, I do not feel I am meeting the needs of many of my students who need movement. By donating to this project, you will be giving students the choice of movement at their own workstation to increase their opportunity for success.
Wobble seats, core balls, core stability cushions, and resistance bands will provide several of my students the movement they need while remaining in the same space. They can bounce, wobble, kick, rock, and focus without distracting their peers and interrupting everyone's learning!
